Database Administrator

Experience Level: 2+ Years
Reports To: Database Team Lead

Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Database Administrator (DBA) to manage and maintain our critical data infrastructure. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the installation, configuration, optimization, and ongoing support of enterprise-grade database systems, ensuring high availability, performance, security, and compliance across the board. This role involves close collaboration with developers, infrastructure teams, and business stakeholders to support strategic initiatives and maintain the integrity of our data environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Database Management & Maintenance
    • Install, configure, upgrade, and maintain relational database systems including Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, and PostgreSQL.
    • Ensure high availability, reliability, and performance of production and development database environments.
    • Monitor database systems using tools and scripts; identify and resolve issues proactively.
    • Implement best practices for database architecture, storage management, and resource utilization.
  2. Performance Tuning & Optimization
    • Analyze and optimize complex SQL queries, indexes, views, and stored procedures to enhance system performance.
    • Conduct periodic health checks, performance diagnostics, and fine-tuning.
    • Use automation tools and scripting languages (e.g., PowerShell, Bash, Python) to streamline regular maintenance tasks such as backups, archiving, and monitoring.
  3. Backup, Recovery & Disaster Mitigation
    • Design, implement, and manage backup and disaster recovery strategies to ensure business continuity.
    • Test recovery processes regularly to ensure data integrity and restoration capabilities.
    • Automate and monitor backup jobs and establish alerts for failures or inconsistencies.
  4. Security & Regulatory Compliance
    • Implement robust security policies and access controls to protect sensitive information.
    • Perform database encryption, auditing, and vulnerability assessments.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant data protection standards and regulations, including GDPR, HIPAA, and PCI-DSS.
  5.  Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Work closely with developers, DevOps, and infrastructure teams to support application performance and database integration.
    • Assist with ETL processes, data migrations, and data transformation requirements.
    • Participate in system design sessions and contribute to scalable, normalized, and secure data models.
  6. Database Upgrades & Patch Management
    • Apply database patches and upgrades in accordance with the organization’s change management processes.
    • Maintain version control and ensure compatibility with applications.
  7. Documentation & Knowledge Management
    • Maintain detailed and up-to-date documentation on database configurations, maintenance tasks, incident handling, and best practices.
    • Provide knowledge transfer and mentoring to junior DBAs or relevant stakeholders when needed.
    • Stay current with industry trends, tools, and emerging database technologies.
  8. Capacity Planning & Resource Forecasting
    • Analyze current usage and forecast future storage, memory, and processing capacity needs.
    • Make recommendations for database scaling, infrastructure enhancement, or cloud migration initiatives.
    • Build and refine scripts and dashboards for real-time performance monitoring and alerting.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Proven experience as a Database Administrator supporting production environments.
  • Strong expertise in one or more of the following: Oracle, MySQL, SQL Server, PostgreSQL.
  • Proficiency in SQL performance tuning, indexing strategies, and query optimization.
  • Experience with scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
  • Hands-on experience in implementing backup/recovery and disaster recovery plans.
  • Knowledge of data security and compliance requirements (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA, PCI-DSS).

Preferred / Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Snowflake or other cloud-based data warehouse platforms.
  • Familiarity with cloud services (e.g., AWS RDS, Azure SQL Database, Google Cloud SQL).
  • Experience with DevOps pipelines, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), or CI/CD tools involving database deployment.
  • Exposure to NoSQL databases such as MongoDB, Cassandra, or Redis.
